Launch of the World Drought Atlas: A Wake-Up Call for Global Action

On December 2nd, the World Drought Atlas was officially launched by the UNCCD and the Joint Research Centre (JRC) of the European Commission. Five of our IVM colleagues—Marthe Wens, Anne van Loon, Anne-Sophie Sabino Siemons, Alicja Grudnowska, and Hans de Moel—played a significant role in developing the Atlas, collaborating with the Italian CIMA Research Foundation and the United Nations University Institute for Environment and Human Security in Germany.

The World Drought Atlas is the most comprehensive global publication on drought risks and mitigation strategies and was presented this week at the UNCCD COP16 on Desertification in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Designed to raise awareness of drought as a pressing global challenge, the Atlas offers detailed insights into drought risks and potential solutions to minimize their impacts. It serves as both a wake-up call and a resource for world leaders to take meaningful action.

In addition to targeting policymakers, the Atlas has a broader purpose. Drawing from literature, global stories, and ideas for improvement, it contributes to understanding the world’s complexity and identifying pathways for a more sustainable future.
