Jose is a Postdoctoral Researcher on groundwater drought and adaptation at the Water and Climate Risk Department of the Institute for Environmental Studies (IVM) of VU Amsterdam. His research focuses on the impacts of drought on groundwater systems in the Netherlands and the implementation of solutions that can contribute to replenishing groundwater storage without posing flood risk. He employs modelling and data analysis to this end.
Prior to his postdoctoral research, he investigated the effects of large-scale managed aquifer recharge (MAR) systems in rural Spain on an over-exploited aquifer (Los Arenales) for his PhD thesis at Universidad Politécnica de Madrid and Tragsa. He also worked for more than two years as a technical coordinator of a groundwater monitoring programme in Colombia and as a water resources specialist in the Netherlands, employing primarily geospatial tools and data analysis.
Jose has a bachelor’s degree in geological engineering from Universidad Nacional de Colombia and an Erasmus Mundus Joint Master Degree in Groundwater and Global Change – Impacts and Adaptation.
Apart from his current research areas, he has expertise and interest in the vadose zone and soil science.
