Ruben was the mangrove expert of the research group in 2018-19. He studied mangrove restoration, looking at the complex process from a financial, socio-economical and environmental point of view. His project was related to the Forest Edge doctoral scholarship, funded by the Leverhulme Trust.

After his MSc at the KU Leuven (Belgium), Ruben worked for eight months in Ethiopia as an intern with the NGO WeForest, specialising in forest conservation and restoration. In addition to his commitment in nature organisations in Belgium, he is active in the non-profit institution BINCO, surveying remote natural areas.
